About
I’m a designer, a strategist, a product owner, an entrepreneur and a soccer fan. I’ve worked at, and with, some fantastic organizations. Here’s my resume and design portfolio.
I often take on consultation work. If you’re interested in a conversation, please reach outEmail me at mark@mwillis.com.. My rate card is available on request.
2000s
My career started in BostonIncluding stops in Somerville, Charlestown and the South End, as an in-house web developer and designer at Elderhostel (now Road Scholar), a non-profit focused on educational travel. I moved to the Museum of Science and helped launch the museum’s first standards-compliant website (mos.org). I then joined HiWired, a SaaS/managed services startup just outside Boston, and worked with large clients like Cox and Comcast.
After HiWired was acquired (it’s now a part of AppDirect), I moved to Harvard University, where I directed web strategy at the Harvard Kennedy School, the preeminent school of public policy in the world. At HKS, I oversaw web strategy and production, including a massive redevelopment of the school’s digital ecosystem and flagship websiteCheck out hks.harvard.edu.
Around this time, I started writing about soccer and design. I published several pieces that used soccer jerseys as a way to explore design and sports history – most notably, Soccer Out of Context.
2010s
I continued to make progress at Harvard. I shipped key projects, like a 75th Anniversary website, and authored a Digital Blueprint document that would soon lead to the school’s ecosystem revamp. I also launched Clean Sheet Co., an apparel startup of my own, that quickly gained traction in the soccer/streetwear space. It wasn’t a full-time endeavor, but it gave me the opportunity to design and produce my own work.
I moved from Boston to Philadelphia with my family, continuing at Harvard for a time. After launching the school’s new website and digital ecosystem, I stepped down to run an independent digital consultancy. My work introduced me to Garfield Group, a digital agency in Philly, and I soon joined as the Senior Director of Digital Strategy. At Garfield, I consulted with clients like Discovery Education, McGraw-Hill and many Philly-area startups.
2020s
I moved to Bailey Brand Consulting, a prominent Philly marketing agency, as the Director of Web Development. At Bailey, I worked with clients like Suncast, Ply Gem / Simonton, and GS1. After Bailey, I transitioned back to independent consulting and design work. In the meantime, Clean Sheet Co. has evolved into a new project, Seabunny, that combines apparel, design, world-building and interactive experiences. Other side projects, like Texel (programmatically generated virtual tulips) and
Edwyn Gift (experimental, spontaneous blockchain art) have also kept me busy.
Did I mention I love soccer? I’ve traveled to France, Germany, South AfricaThis trip, to the 2010 World Cup, doubled as my honeymoon! and Brazil to attend recent World Cups. I pull for the American national teams, and support Brighton on the club side. I’m also a lifelong fan of Boston sports, and was lucky enough to be around Fenway when the Red Sox won it all in 2004.
I graduated from Bucknell UniversityBucknell 64, Kansas 63 with a BA in Computer Science / BA in English Literature, and also attended the University of Sussex in the UK. I’m certified in UX practices (Neilsen Norman Group).
I live with my family (and a big, silly dog) just north of Philadelphia.
